Unsupportive Partners versus Bacon

Last week we talked about facing change and how it can be difficult. It is even more difficult when you have an unsupportive partner.

You should be able to share all your goals and dreams in a non-judgmental environment within every relationship. This is true in all relationships, parent and child, siblings and friends, business and romantic.

There are many reasons why those close to us don’t or can’t support us.

B – Bothered, Bored, or Inconvenienced

A – Animosity (Jealousy)

C – Challenged (Threatened)

O – Overly Concerned

N – Not taken Seriously

When faced with a uninterested, unsympathetic, or antagonistic partner we must be willing to express our feelings and to listen. Be clear about our plans, listen to their concerns. Explain our passion and try to get them involved. Empathize with their feelings and try to understand how your changes will affect them.

Avoid dismissing their thoughts and feelings. Don’t let a discussion about dreams turn into an argument or ultimatum where someone must lose.

If you want your aspirations and ideas supported, you must start by supporting those around you. Remember the three circles. My goals, your goals, and our goals. Each will take priority at different times, but none are more important than the others.
