Have you ever sat in a meeting, completely lost, but terrified to raise your hand? You look around, and everyone else seems to be nodding in sagely agreement. You think to yourself, "I must be the only one who doesn't get it." So, you stay silent. You shrink. You let the moment pass because you're afraid of being the "curious doofus" in the room.
We've all been there. That sinking feeling isn't just awkwardness; it's a crack in the foundation of our self-confidence.

With Special Guest: Tiffany!

On this week's episode of Bacon Bits with Master Happiness, host Marty Jalove and his "Queen of Confidence" sidekick, Tiffany, dive deep into this exact struggle. They laugh, they banter, and they get real about the messy, beautiful quest for self-belief. If you’ve ever felt like you’re faking it, or if you’re just waiting for permission to be your authentic self, this episode is your permission slip.
And because it’s Bacon Bits, you know we’re serving up a strategy that sizzles. Get ready to bring home the BACON.
The "Curious Doofus" vs. The Queen of Clarity
One of the highlights of the show is the dynamic between Marty and Tiffany. Tiffany, a returning favorite guest, admits she often feels like the least intelligent person in the room because she’s the one taking notes and asking the boss to "dumb it down."
But Marty flips the script beautifully. He challenges us to stop labeling ourselves as the "doofus" and start wearing the crown of the "Queen (or King) of Clarity."
Think about it: When you ask a question, you aren't slowing the team down; you are ensuring the job gets done right. You are on a quest for knowledge. You are brave enough to admit you don't know everything, and that is a hallmark of true confidence.
As Marty points out in the episode, understanding is a two-way street. By asking for clarification, you aren't just helping yourself; you're likely helping the three other people in the room who were too terrified to speak up. You’re the hero they didn’t know they needed.

Why Is Confidence So Hard to Cook Up?
Before we get to the solution, let's look at the problem. Why is self-doubt our default setting?
It turns out, we’re wired for it. As Marty explains, our brains have an ancient survival mechanism—a negativity bias. Thousands of years ago, ignoring a beautiful sunset wouldn't kill you, but ignoring the rustle in the bushes (which might be a saber-tooth tiger) definitely would. We evolved to scan for threats, failures, and worst-case scenarios.
The problem is, our biology hasn't caught up with our reality. There are no saber-tooth tigers in the conference room or at the grocery store. Yet, when we make a mistake or face a new challenge, our brain screams "DANGER!" just the same. We have to actively train our "happiness muscle" to override that ancient programming and see the good in the world and in ourselves.
Your 5-Step Recipe for Confidence: BACON
You can’t just wish for confidence; you have to build it. And to make it stick, Marty and Tiffany break it down into an acronym that’s impossible to forget: BACON.
B - Body Language: Stand Tall
Your mind affects your body, but your body also affects your mind. During the episode, Marty actually makes Tiffany stand up and strike a "Wonder Woman" pose, legs apart, hands on hips, chin up, chest out.
It sounds silly, but it works. When you slouch, you tell your brain you are small and unworthy. When you stand tall and take up space, you flood your system with signals of power and control. Before your next big presentation or difficult conversation, find a quiet spot (maybe not on camera like Tiffany!) and stand like a superhero for two minutes. Breathe in deeply through your nose, out through your mouth. Feel the ground beneath your feet.
A - Affirmations: Speak Your Truth
We’re not talking about the old Saturday Night Live skits where you stare in the mirror and lie to yourself. Affirmations only work if you believe them.
If you say "I am the greatest athlete in history" but you’ve never run a mile, your brain will reject it. Instead, focus on truths you can stand behind. "I am a good person." "I am worthy of respect." "I am damn good at my job."
In a touching moment on the show, Tiffany looks right into the camera and practices this. It’s awkward at first! But repetition rewires the brain. If you tell yourself you’re clumsy or "bad with names" enough times, it becomes your reality. Why not tell yourself a better story?
C - Competence: Master a Skill
Confidence comes from competence. It’s about the "Shine, Sharpen, and Share" philosophy.
Shine: Be proud of who you are.
Sharpen: Work on getting better at something every day.
Share: Give your gift to the world.
Whether it’s learning a new language, figuring out Excel pivot tables, or perfecting a recipe for bacon-wrapped dates (which Marty and Tiffany discuss in mouth-watering detail), mastering a skill gives you concrete proof of your ability. You don’t have to be the best in the world; you just have to be willing to learn.
O - Outside Your Comfort Zone: Take a Tiny Leap
Nothing grows in a comfort zone. To build confidence, you have to prove to yourself that you can survive uncertainty.
Tiffany shares a personal victory about conquering her fear of high bridges. She didn’t just avoid them; she asked to be driven over the tallest bridge in Florida. Was she scared? Absolutely. Did she survive? Yes. And what did she do on the other side? She got ice cream.
The lesson: Do the scary thing, then celebrate. It doesn’t have to be skydiving. It can be trying a new restaurant, speaking to a stranger, or crossing a bridge. Every time you survive a "tiny leap," you dismantle a little bit of that fear.
N - Note Your Wins: Celebrate Your Success
Finally, you need to track the data. Our brains are Velcro for failure and Teflon for success. We remember the one awkward comment we made five years ago, but forget the major project we nailed last week.
Keep a "Win Journal." Write down what brings you joy and what you’re good at. As Marty helps Tiffany realize, you are a "Venn diagram" of unique skills. You might not be the world's best hiker, and you might not be the world's best conversationalist, but you might be the best hiking conversationalist who brings joy to everyone on the trail. That is your superpower.
Tune In for the Full Serving
This blog post is just an appetizer. To truly get the flavor of Marty and Tiffany’s chemistry and to hear the full story about the bacon-wrapped dates with goat cheese; you need to listen to the episode.
They discuss how to deal with people who try to make you feel small, why laughter therapy is real science, and why you should be your own biggest fan (even if you meet LeBron James).
Don't stay on the sidelines of your own life. It’s time to stand tall, speak your truth, and get a little crispy.
