Building Your Dream Team in Tough Times

Leading a team through hard times comes down to communication. On Episode 5 of Building your Dream Team on Bacon Bits with Master Happiness, Marty Jalove and guest Mary Schepp share the BACON framework: Be Transparent, Acknowledge Feelings, Clarify the Path Forward, Open the Conversation, and Nurture Growth.

What do you do when the pressure is on, the goals feel far away, and your team is looking to you for answers? Do you go quiet and grind it out alone? Or do you bring everyone closer?

That question sits at the heart of Episode 5. We dig into a truth that too many leaders learn the hard way: Your dream team is not built when things are easy. It is forged when times get tough.

What's in Episode 5?

This is Part 5 of a 6-part series on building a dream team. Bacon Bits with Master Happiness airs on 98.3 FM The Life every Monday at 7pm and is now in its fifth season. Host Marty Jalove brings his trademark energy, and this time he is joined by Mary Schepp (yes, with a silent "c") of Brightway Insurance, the Janicki Agency.

Mary Schepp knows a thing or two about leading people. Her agency serves clients from offices in Lake Zurich, Illinois, and Winter Park, Florida. Throughout the episode, Marty and Mary trade stories, laughs, and hard-won lessons about what it really takes to keep a team motivated when the road gets rocky.

The conversation moves fast, but it always circles back to one idea: communication is the glue. And the framework they use to explain it is easy to remember, because it spells out a word Marty loves — BACON.

What is the BACON framework for leading a team?

The BACON framework breaks team communication into five simple steps. Each letter stands for a habit that strong leaders practice on purpose, not by accident.

B is for Be Transparent

Share what you know. Be honest and open, even about the things you do not have figured out yet. Mary makes the point that people can handle the truth far better than they can handle being left in the dark. When a leader admits "I am not sure yet, but here is what we are working on," trust grows. Hiding the hard stuff only breeds rumors and worry.

A is for Acknowledge Feelings

Your employees are human first. They have good days, bad days, and everything in between. The BACON framework reminds leaders to check in consistently, not only when a crisis hits. A quick "How are you really doing?" can mean more than any pep talk. Acknowledging feelings tells your team they are seen, and seen people show up stronger.

C is for Clarify the Path Forward

Vague goals create stuck teams. Marty and Mary stress three questions every leader should answer: What does success look like? Who owns it? And when is it due? Define the finish line, hand someone the baton, and set a deadline. Clarity turns a foggy challenge into a clear set of next steps.

O is for Open the Conversation

Great leadership is a two-way dialogue, not a lecture. Mary draws on her insurance background to make a sharp point: drop the "sales" mentality and lead with education instead. When you teach rather than push, people lean in. Ask questions. Listen more than you talk. The best ideas often come from the folks doing the daily work.

N is for Nurture Growth

Keep growth going by asking one simple question over and over: "What did you learn?" Then check whether anyone's goals have shifted. People change, and so do their ambitions. A leader who nurtures growth pays attention to those shifts and helps team members keep climbing toward what matters to them now.

What made this episode so fun to listen to?

The lessons land because Marty and Mary clearly enjoy each other's company. The chemistry crackles. At one point, the two riff on a jeans analogy to explain why the right fit matters. Later, a mix-up between Fiji and Puerto Rico sends them both into laughter. There is a peanut butter and jelly moment too, the kind of easy back-and-forth that makes a serious topic feel like a chat with friends.

Marty's style does what it does best, it amplifies his guest. He gives Mary room to share her insights, then punches up each point with humor and heart. That balance keeps the energy high while the wisdom keeps flowing.

The pair also take a moment to spotlight a great cause: the "Dunk a Joe" charity event on July 25th from 2 to 6pm at Buffalo Creek Brewing in Long Grove, Illinois. The event benefits veterans through Veterans Path to Hope, with food trucks, a cash bar, and plenty of community fun. It is a fitting reminder that strong teams give back.

Bacon Bits: 5 takeaways from Episode 5

  • Tough times reveal your team. Real dream teams are built under pressure, not in calm waters.

  • Transparency beats silence. Share what you know, admit what you don't, and watch trust grow.

  • People are human first. Check in consistently, not just when a crisis strikes.

  • Clarity drives action. Define success, assign an owner, and set a deadline.

  • Lead with education, not a sales pitch. Open a two-way conversation and keep asking, "What did you learn?"

Your next step
