From Awkward to Authentic: 5 Steps to Camera Confidence

Have you ever frozen up the moment a lens points your way? You know the feeling. Your smile gets stiff, your hands suddenly feel like foreign objects attached to your body, and you wonder if you’ve ever looked natural a day in your life.

If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. Camera shyness is a universal struggle. But what if you could flip that script? What if you could move from feeling awkward to being completely, unapologetically authentic?

In this episode of the Bacon Bits podcast, I sat down with the incredible Kasia Vetter of Kasia Vetter Photography. We dove deep into the art of being yourself on camera. Kasia isn't just a photographer; she’s an energy reader, a confidence booster, and a master at making people feel like family. The chemistry in the studio was electric, and we unpacked exactly why we get so nervous and how to overcome it using a special framework I like to call BACON.

Why Do We Freeze Up?

Before we can fix the problem, we have to understand it. Why does a piece of glass and plastic make us so nervous?

Kasia and I discussed the root causes of camera shyness, and it usually boils down to three things:

  1. Fear of Judgment: We worry about what others will think. Will they criticize our hair? Our outfit? Our message?

  2. Perfectionism: We want everything to be flawless. We think one stutter or one hair out of place ruins the whole shot.

  3. Lack of Experience: It’s just not natural to talk to an inanimate object. We’re social creatures used to talking to people, not machines.

But here’s the truth: people don’t connect with perfection. They connect with authenticity. They connect with you.

The BACON Framework for Camera Confidence

To help you break through that wall of awkwardness, we broke down a simple, memorable acronym. Next time you step in front of a lens, just remember BACON.

B: Breathe

It sounds simple, but it’s the first thing we forget to do. When anxiety hits, we hold our breath. Our shoulders creep up to our ears, and our voice gets tight.

Kasia suggests taking a moment before the shutter clicks or the record button starts. Inhale deeply. Exhale slowly. Let your shoulders drop. When you breathe, you signal to your nervous system that you are safe. You are in control. A relaxed body leads to a natural smile.

A: Acknowledge Your Fears

Fear grows in the dark. When you try to ignore your nervousness, it tends to get louder. Instead, give it a name. Acknowledge it.

Say to yourself, "I’m feeling nervous right now because I want this to be good." That’s okay! Nervousness is just excitement without the breath. Once you acknowledge the fear, it loses its power over you. You can invite it along for the ride, but don't let it drive the car.

C: Connect with Your Audience

This is the game-changer. Stop looking at the lens as a piece of glass. Stop thinking about the thousands of anonymous strangers on the internet.

Instead, visualize one person. Who are you talking to? Is it your best friend? A favorite client? Your mom? When you speak to one specific person, your tone changes. Your eyes soften. You become relational rather than robotic. You aren't performing; you're connecting.

O: Own Your Quirks

Here is a secret from the photography world: your "imperfections" are actually your superpowers. That crooked smile? That loud laugh? The way you talk with your hands? Those are the things that make you, you.

Kasia’s philosophy is all about capturing the human spirit. AI can generate a perfect image, but it can’t generate a soul. It can’t capture the twinkle in your eye or the genuine warmth of your laugh. Embrace the things that make you different. Authenticity is magnetic.

N: Never Stop Practicing

Confidence is a muscle. You don’t go to the gym once and expect to bench press 300 pounds. The same goes for being on camera.

The first video you make might be terrible. The tenth will be better. The hundredth will be second nature. Repetition kills fear. The more you show up, the less scary it becomes. So, pull out your phone. Record a story. Snap a selfie. Do it messy, do it scared, but just keep doing it.

The Human Touch in a Digital World

We also touched on a hot topic: Artificial Intelligence. With AI generating headshots and content, is professional photography dead?

Absolutely not. In fact, Kasia argues it’s more important than ever.

AI can create a "perfect" face, but it can't create a connection. A session with a photographer like Kasia is about the experience. It’s about the energy exchange. It’s about someone seeing you—really seeing you—and reflecting that beauty back to you. It’s about feeling like family.

When you work with a pro who understands how to put you at ease, you aren't just getting a photo. You’re getting a confidence boost that lasts long after the session is over.
