The BACON Framework for Building a Team

As always, Marty brings his unique BACON acronym to the table, adding a flavorful twist to the conversation. Here’s how BACON applies to building a strong team:

  • B: Build Your Culture Blueprint

Marty and Joe emphasize that a strong team starts with a solid cultural foundation. Your company’s culture is the blueprint for how you operate, hire, and grow. Joe shares how he and his team whiteboarded their ideal candidate’s qualities, refined them, and turned them into core values. For Joe’s team, these values even spell out "TACOS" (Teamwork, Accountability, Continuous Improvement, Optimism, and Service). Marty adds that culture isn’t just for employees, it should also guide your relationships with clients and vendors.

  • A: Align Your Values with Your Mission

Your mission is what you do, but your values define how you do it. Marty and Joe discuss the importance of ensuring your values and mission are in sync. Joe’s mission, “to provide peace of mind while always giving clients more than they expect,” is a perfect example of this alignment. They also stress the importance of living your values authentically; don’t just create a list to impress others. Be true to yourself, and the right employees and clients will follow.

  • C: Communicate Your Culture in Recruitment

Recruitment is your first opportunity to showcase your culture. Marty and Joe agree that it’s crucial to ask interview questions that reflect your core values. For example, if teamwork is a core value, ask candidates about their experiences working in teams or leading them. Joe shares how his team is very protective of their culture, ensuring that new hires align with their values. He also highlights the importance of being transparent about your company’s culture during interviews, this helps attract the right candidates and repel the wrong ones.

  • O: Optimize Onboarding for Inclusion

Onboarding is where the magic happens, or doesn’t. Joe explains how his team makes new hires feel welcome with personalized welcome baskets and a clear eight-week training plan. Marty adds that onboarding is about more than just training; it’s about helping new employees feel like they belong. A strong onboarding process sets the tone for long-term success and ensures new hires understand and embrace your culture.

  • N: Notice Cultural Catalysts During Interviews

Cultural catalysts are those rare individuals who not only align with your values but elevate them. Marty and Joe discuss the importance of identifying these individuals during the interview process. These are the people who will inspire your team, challenge the status quo, and push your company to new heights. Joe shares how his team embodies their “help first” attitude, often going above and beyond for clients; even if it means recommending they stay with a competitor.

Fun Banter & Real Talk

As always, Marty and Joe keep the conversation lively with their playful banter. From Marty’s rhyming intros to Joe’s taco-themed core values, the episode is packed with laughs and lighthearted moments. But beneath the humor lies a wealth of wisdom. Both Marty and Joe are candid about their own experiences, including the mistakes they’ve made and the lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Key Takeaways

  1. Culture is King: A strong culture is the foundation of a strong team. Define your values, live by them, and communicate them clearly during recruitment and onboarding.

  2. Hire Slow, Fire Fast: Take your time to find the right fit, but don’t hesitate to part ways with someone who doesn’t align with your culture.

  3. Onboarding Matters: A thoughtful onboarding process can make or break a new hire’s experience. Invest the time and effort to set them up for success.

  4. Celebrate Diversity: A diverse team brings fresh perspectives and ideas. Embrace individuality while aligning on shared values.

  5. Small Steps Lead to Big Growth: Encourage your team to focus on small, incremental improvements. Over time, these add up to significant progress.

Tune In for More!

This episode is just the beginning of an exciting series on building a strong team. In future episodes, Marty and Joe will dive deeper into topics like onboarding, training, and retaining top talent.
