Do you treat your happiness like a winning lottery ticket? Are you waiting, wishing, and wondering if one day your lucky numbers will finally get called?
For too long, we have placed our joy in the hands of chance. We hope for it, we wait for it, and we wish for it. But what if happiness is not a destination you miraculously arrive at? What if, instead, it is a daily discipline, a sturdy track you lay down piece by piece, purpose by purpose?

In a recent, wildly energetic episode of Bacon Bits with Master Happiness, host Marty Jalove sat down with the effervescent Happiness Coach Bette Lawrence Water. The chemistry between these two was absolutely electric, bubbling with infectious enthusiasm. Bette even brought bacon maple donuts to the studio, because what is a show about BACON without a little sweet and savory treat to start things off right?
Together, they served up a sizzling masterclass on the real science of joy, proving that lasting happiness is something we actively build.
The Science of a Smile: The 50/10/40 Rule
Before diving into the recipe for joy, Bette dropped a massive truth bomb backed by decades of research. Did you know that your happiness is governed by the 50/10/40 rule?
Research from top universities reveals that 50% of our happiness is actually genetic. We inherit our baseline disposition. Another 10% is based on material circumstances, our wealth, our jobs, the cars we drive. But here is the magnificent magic: a massive 40% is entirely within our control. That 40% is built on the choices we make, the habits we form, and the perspectives we adopt.
How do we maximize that 40%? We bring home the BACON.
The BACON Framework for Lasting Joy
Marty and Bette broke down the foundational ingredients of happiness using the perfectly fitting acronym: BACON. Here is how you can cook up a better, brighter life.
B is for Belief
You have to believe you are worthy of happiness. Belief is the bedrock of your joy journey. You cannot wait around saying, "I will be happy when I get that promotion," or "I will be happy when I lose ten pounds." You must snap out of the waiting game and step into the believing game.
Bette reminded us that we must be determined to do the work. It is about waking up and declaring that you deserve joy, despite your genetic disposition or your current circumstances. Make up your mind to be a happier person today, not tomorrow.
A is for Alignment
Are your daily actions matching your desire for happiness? Alignment means doing the actual exercises required to strengthen your joy muscles.
Bette shared how the longest-running Harvard study on adult development proved that happy people live longer and enjoy a better quality of life. But they do not just stumble into it; they align their lives with kindness. Whether it is random acts of kindness, holding a door, or secretly paying for the car behind you in the drive-thru, aligning your actions with a spirit of giving brings incredible internal rewards.
C is for Connection
Humans are profoundly social creatures. We crave connection, community, and camaraderie.
During the darkest, most isolating days of the pandemic, Bette refused to let loneliness win.
What did she do? She threw a ZOOM birthday party for her cat! Twenty-six people logged on with their turtles, dogs, birds, and hamsters to laugh, share, and even dance the Macarena. She also crocheted 46 blankets for the homeless, giving them away with pure love stitched into every square. Connection is not just about family; it is about reaching out to the forgotten, the lonely, and the community around you.
O is for Ownership
When hard times hit, do you point fingers or do you pivot? Ownership is about taking radical responsibility for your reactions.
Stop playing the victim and start playing the victor. Bette suggests journaling as a powerful tool for ownership. By physically writing down your daily experiences (both the triumphs and the trials) you force yourself to ask: "What did I do to contribute to this situation, and what can I do to make it better?" You take the pen, and you write your own resilient reality.
N is for Now
Anxiety lives in the future, and depression dwells in the past. True happiness happens right now.
When you feel yourself spiraling into worry, Marty and Bette highly recommend the "five senses" grounding exercise to anchor you back to the present. When panic sets in, pause and identify:
5 things you can see
4 things you can physically touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
This simple sensory shift pulls you out of your emotional spiral and roots you firmly in the logical, peaceful present.
The Electric Energy of Master Happiness
Listening to Marty and Bette bounce ideas off one another is like watching two master musicians completely in sync. Marty's natural curiosity and high-octane optimism perfectly amplified Bette’s deep, academic wisdom and boundless compassion. Their conversation was not just a clinical look at positive psychology; it was a deeply human, laugh-out-loud dialogue that proved happiness is not just a solo sport, it is a shared celebration.
